Black Friday- A Tiny House Host’s Best Friend
Every year, I waffle between excitement and pure dread at the thought of Black Friday. Remembering that I was a tiny houser in spirit long before I was a tiny house host, it’s easy to understand why a day devoted entirely to the consumption (I’d even argue OVER consumption) of commercially made goods would give me hives. It’s a day literally devoted to bringing out the very worst of our consumerist tendencies.
Like it or not, however, Black Friday is a critical day for Airbnb hosts. If you’re hosting, and not shopping on Black Friday, you’re either sleeping at the wheel, or you deserve my admiration for voluntarily foregoing the cost-saving opportunities in exchange for maintaining ownership of your soul.
Black Friday is in just two days, so I’m going to cut to the chase and let you get searching for those deals.
Today is the day that you should be capitalizing on #allthedeals. Seriously. If you don’t have a list of consumables (items that need to be frequently replaced either because they are disposable or frequently damaged/need replacing) then I’m going to help you out by letting you download mine, which you can edit.
My advice? Start with a budget. What amount of money can you spare right now? $100? $200? $500? It’s the holiday season, and money is already tight, but let’s be honest. Eventually, you’re going to have to replace this stuff anyway so if you can spare any amount of money now, it’ll be worth the investment to pay 20%, 50%, even 75% less than you usually would.
Next, go down the list and rank them in order of importance to buy now. What do I mean by this? I mean, you might blow through paper towels, but even if they’re 25% off, is it really worth the $4 savings to stock up right now? Probably not. My list looks like this:
Now that I know what I need, and which items I need most, I’ll be able to quickly navigate through the online sales, or through the aisles if I’m brave enough to venture out (I’m not).
To make this even easier for you, and because I love providing value to my readers, if you download the special Black Friday Consumables Worksheet I have prepared for you, not only do I list out ALL the items that your tiny house needs, I’ve even input average prices for all the things, so that you can find out exactly how good of a deal that “Black Friday Discount” is. Pretty amazing right? You’re welcome.
But it gets better. I’ve ALSO added a column with the vendor that I’ve found to have the best consistent prices or selection on things. I’ve been doing this for over two years, and I’ve done a LOT of price checking, quality comparisons, etc, so there is value to having this information on hand.
And, if that wasn’t enough, I’ve also thrown in a column that tells you about, on average, how many of each item you’ll need to purchase a year (based on wear, damage, use, etc.). That way, if you’re just starting out and you aren’t sure how many sets of sheets you’ll need to get through the year, or if you’re wondering whether it’s worth buying a few more towels now or waiting, you’ll know!
Oh, and one more thing. I’ve built in some formulas and cells to help you stay on budget. Let’s not lose sight of our tiny house mentality. Buy what you need, get a good deal, but don’t go crazy. You’re running a business, let’s be smart about it.
The best part? It’s all TOTALLY FREE!! I’m giving this tool to you completely free. It’s MY Black Friday deal for you.:) All I want in return is for you to share this post with as many friends/family as you think would find value in it. And, if you’re interested, I’ll be sharing all the applicable Black Friday deals I can find for items on that list on my twitter, facebook, and Instagram feeds all day on Friday, so follow along!
Don’t forget to download the worksheet. Click below and then check your email. Follow the instructions to make sure you use it to the fullest potential!
